You’ll notice that I haven’t described Thorne physically, and there’s a good reason. I believe that a character exists in the mind of both the reader and the writer and it’s where those two pictures intersect that the character is really defined. Tall, dark and handsome? Well, Thorne is not exactly tall and is probably dark-ish, but beyond that, I wouldn’t like to say. I’ve occasionally attended book groups and listened to readers argue about what Thorne looks like; one maintaining that he has “lovely, warm” eyes, while another insists they are “cold and threatening”. Of course, they are both right and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I once ran a competition for which people had to suggest actors who might play Thorne on TV. They had to submit both sensible and silly suggestions and it was amazing how many people cropped up on both lists.
